Niinistö noted that Finland’s accession to NATO “in the most optimistic case will take weeks.” And its entry will not worsen the position of Sweden.
“Hopefully it won’t take long for Sweden to join the alliance after Finland. Elections are ahead in Turkey and it will be very interesting to see how they end up,” Niinistö said.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May 2022. Turkey opposes Sweden’s candidacy. Ankara believes that Stockholm has not fulfilled all of their conditions. The situation was also complicated by the burning of the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
At the same time, Erdogan said that Ankara is waiting for the completion of the ratification of Finland’s application to NATO before the elections in Turkey (May 14).
