“The IAEA Board of Governors has elected Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi as Director General of the agency for a second term,” the diplomat wrote.
The powers of the head of the department have been extended until December 2, 2027.
Grossi was appointed head of the IAEA in October 2019. Former Director General of the IAEA Yukiya Amano died in July 2019, he has headed the agency since 2009.
In September 2022, an IAEA mission led by Rafael Grossi visited the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Energodar, whose authorities have repeatedly complained about the shelling of the territory by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a result of the trip, the mission published a report, which, however, did not indicate from which side the station was shelled. According to Mikhail Ulyanov, this became the “weakest and most problematic” part of the document.
