He Jabugo Town Hall final preparations for a new edition, number 13, of the World’s Greatest Stewwhich will be tasted this March 18 in the year in which Jabugo has been named Spanish Gastronomic City 2023. The presence of some 3,000 attendees is expected in what is one of the most anticipated events in the region.
The activity, which is held in even years due to its size, repeats its edition again this odd year due to the appointment of the mountain town as Spanish Gastronomic City 2023. Its journey began in 1998, being in 2020 the only occasion in which which has not been held due to the pandemic.
Almost 700 kilos of chickpeas, potatoes, pumpkin, old bacon, salty backbone, salty rib, prey, fresh bacon, blood sausage, jabuguitos, chorizo and an Iberian pig of about 20 arrobas They will be cooked in a pot two meters in diameter and 500 kilos in weight, with 2,500 kilos of oak firewood, in the purest traditional style. Along with the stew, attendees will be able to taste some 2,000 dishes of ham, 500 kilos of bread, 3,000 liters of beer, 1,500 liters of wine and 4,000 liters of soft drinks.
The mayor of Jabugo, Gilberto Domínguez, has highlighted “the determined commitment of the City Council to this activity since its inception”, in which the collaboration of some 60 industries in the area is essential. Likewise, he has pointed out that this event “offers a huge national and international projection to Jabugo and the Sierra in just two days”, being “a great showcase in this special year for the municipality, with the designation of Gastronomic City”. The mayor has valued the role played by the residents of the town “without whose collaboration it would be impossible to organize an event of this magnitude.”
For the elaboration of the stew, for yet another year, the collaboration of the associations and residents of the municipality who await the celebration of the event with the same enthusiasm as last year will be essential, putting the starting gun on Friday afternoon to warm up with music, joy and typical dishes of the area. As the mayor has emphasized, the stew “promotes tourism in the region, promotes typical products and encourages coexistence among all the residents of the town, the region and other areas of the province.”
The elaboration of the stew will begin on Thursday afternoon when the chickpeas are soaked. On Friday afternoon it will begin to cook over low heat in the traditional way so that on Saturday at noon it can be ready to be served to diners.
The program of the event will begin on Friday, March 17 from 6:30 p.m. with a parade by the Municipal Music Band and the subsequent opening of the stands, as well as a tasting of typical products. At 9:00 pm ‘Los Shibuyas’ will put the musical note on the evening.
On Saturday, March 18, the program will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a parade and the opening of the venue. The mayor of Jabugo will inaugurate the event at 1:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. the stew with its pringá will be tasted. At 4:00 p.m. the Show will take place in the Caseta el 5 pino with the Jorge de la Suerte Company and at 9:00 p.m. the night will be entertained by Dj Mawi. The closing of this gastronomic event will take place at 02:00.
Tickets will cost 8 euros for adults and 4 euros for children (4 to 12 years).
