From April 21 to April 30, for the first time, a large-scale action of the Russian Geographical Society “NON-geography lesson” will be held throughout the country. The main goal of the new educational project is to tell about the geographical, cultural, historical heritage of Russia, the traditions and customs of its peoples.
“NOT a geography lesson“ is a fundamentally new educational format. Unlike a standard school lesson, it turns the learning process into an entertaining journey and an exciting game. Its participants are expected to go on hikes, master classes, excursions, practical classes, as well as interactive events using a virtual educational and entertainment portal “World of Geography”. Within 10 days, within the framework of the project of the Russian Geographical Society, which is supported by the Natalia Tornkvist Charitable Foundation “Revival of Nature”, 440 events will be held in 65 regions of the Russian Federation.
The project “NEUROK geography” will start on April 21 at the Moscow Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society. Guests of the holiday will learn about how the outstanding painter Ivan Aivazovsky would depict the waves in his famous painting “The Ninth Wave” if he were a geographer, what determines the “geography of sports”, whether it is possible to swim in the air and many other interesting things. Thanks to VR technologies, the participants of the event will be on an excursion, which will be conducted for them by the oceanographer, polar explorer, Admiral Alexander Kolchak.
On the same day, April 21, in Murmansk, on board the Lenin nuclear icebreaker, there will be a fascinating lecture with a very intriguing title “How a polar bear almost ate me.” Its main topic is the Arctic expeditions of the Russian Geographical Society.
Participants of the auto-excursion-lecture “Volcanism: beyond the boundaries of the textbook”, which will be held on April 22 on the road from the village of Termalny to the Vilyuchinsky Pass in Kamchatka, will see the active volcanoes Gorely and Mutnovsky. They will also get acquainted with an experimental freon geothermal power plant.
In Vladikavkaz, “NON-lesson of geography” will be held on April 25 in the format of a geographical concert with the participation of the National Variety Orchestra named after Kim Suanov. Each lecture here will be followed by a musical performance.
In the Republic of Crimea, on April 27–28, participants in a large-scale project of the Russian Geographical Society will gather in the Taurida Cave, recognized as one of the main paleontological discoveries of the early 21st century. There, actors in the guise of the White Speleologist and other mythical characters will tell about the secrets of the longest karst cavity in the foothills of the peninsula. Guests of the event will be able to make paints from clay, sand, limestone 3-5 million years old with their own hands.
On April 28, at the Headquarters of the Sverdlovsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, a video tour of Yekaterinburg will be held in honor of the 300th anniversary of the city, and in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a real Nenets camp, ride a sled drawn by reindeer, get acquainted with the sacred rite of purification fire, take part in national games.
On April 29, in the Isupovskoye (Susaninskoye) swamp nature reserve in the Kostroma region, an actor disguised as Ivan Susanin will talk about the history and biology of a unique natural complex. Guests of the event will enjoy a hot air balloon ride.
