Arkhangelsk will host the 1st Conference on Bioresources and Fisheries in the Arctic on May 11–12 as part of Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021–2023. The event will become a platform for dialogue between representatives of authorities, science and business to develop effective mechanisms on which the development of the region and the preservation of its ecosystem depend.
The Arctic zone is a strategically important territory of the Russian Federation. The exploration and development of the Arctic reserves, the development of the region’s infrastructure, as well as the training of professional personnel are topical issues that require a comprehensive and coordinated solution.
— For many centuries, Soviet and Russian pioneers — Semyon Dezhnev, Vitus Bering, Semyon Chelyuskin, Georgy Sedov, Eduard Toll, Ferdinand Wrangel, Vladimir Wiese, Otto Schmidt and many other, often obscure researchers who sought to conquer the Arctic — contributed to the study of this harsh the region made a huge contribution, making it possible to develop the most polar territories. The importance of the Arctic for the future of the countries that are members of the Council, as well as all of humanity, cannot be overestimated, — noted in greeting conference participants, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Victoria Abramchenko.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss effective mechanisms for the development of the fishery complex in the Arctic region and measures to preserve the ecosystem in high latitudes. The conference will be opened by the plenary session “Aquatic biological resources. Fisheries and stock conservation in the Arctic”. In addition, there will be eight discussions in the format of round tables and seminars, as well as a seminar on the development of aquaculture in Russia.
