A memorial plaque in honor of the climatologist, geographer, traveler, chairman of the Meteorological Commission of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society Alexander Voeikov was unveiled on the facade of the Tuapse Ecological and Biological Center. Earlier, at the initiative of the Russian Geographical Society, this institution was named after an outstanding scientist.
Alexander Ivanovich Voeikov (1842–1916) is credited with creating agricultural meteorology and organizing special experimental stations for observations in this area. For 32 years he headed the Meteorological Commission of the Russian Geographical Society.
Voeikov for the first time gave a detailed meteorological and climatic description of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus and, in particular, the Tuapse region, which he visited in 1898, and also scientifically substantiated the development of horticulture and viticulture here.
The memorial plaque was installed by the Russian Geographical Society with the active support of the administration of the Tuapse district and the Ecological and Biological Center named after. A. I. Voeikova. The opening ceremony was attended by the chairman of the Krasnodar regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, a member of the Public Chamber of Kuban Ivan Chaika, the head of the district Sergey Boyko, representatives of local authorities, members of the Tuapse, Apsheron and Belorechensk regional branches of the Society, pupils and teachers of the institution.
Sergei Boyko stressed that the event was a historic event for the entire Tuapse region. He expressed hope for further cooperation with the Russian Geographical Society.
– The Tuapse district was one of the first in the Krasnodar Territory to join the federal project to assign the names of famous scientists – members of the Russian Geographical Society to educational and cultural institutions. The Ecological and Biological Center is one of the key partners of the Tuapse branch of the Russian Geographical Society in the implementation of educational and environmental projects. We donate to the center’s library the original issue of the “Proceedings of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society” of 1916, dedicated to A. I. Voeikov, as well as our book “Picturesque Russia”. I hope they will initiate the exposition of a small museum dedicated to Alexander Ivanovich, – Ivan Chaika said.
Ivan Chaika presented gratitude from the Krasnodar regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society to the director of the Ecological and Biological Center named after A.I. A. I. Voeikov of the city of Tuapse Tatyana Burlai.
– Alexander Ivanovich Voeikov knew how to look into the future. In public speeches and articles, he insisted on a thorough study of the climate of medical areas and explained in detail to balneologists how to install meteorological instruments in order to obtain correct information about temperatures, atmospheric pressure, sunshine, precipitation, direction and strength of winds. A strait in the Lesser Ridge of the Kuril Islands, a research vessel, a village in the Leningrad Region, several streets in Moscow, a glacier discovered in the Northern Urals, and a climatic term are named after him. The main geophysical observatory also bears the name of Voeikov, – reminded Tatyana Burlai.
As part of the event, an exhibition from the Golden Fund of the Russian Geographical Society “Great Konstantinovsky Medal” dedicated to all holders of the highest award of the Russian Geographical Society was opened in the assembly hall of the Ecological and Biological Center.
– Not only pupils of the center, but also schoolchildren and students of the district will get acquainted with the materials of the exhibition, – noted the chairman of the Tuapse regional branch of the Society, Mikael Arakelov.
