The death toll from the February earthquakes in Turkey continues to rise. 49,589 people became victims of the disaster. This was announced by Vice President of Turkey Fuat Oktay.

Earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in early February with an interval of several hours in the province of Kahramanmarash in the southeast of the country. Tremors were felt in 11 Turkish provinces and neighboring countries.

The Turkish authorities have called the earthquake “the catastrophe of the century.” According to the latest data, destroyed in the country more than 820 thousand buildings. Turkey has detained more than 200 developers and contractors who may be responsible for the collapse of buildings. Experts found that construction companies used low-quality materials.

Dozens of field hospitals have been deployed in the provinces of Turkey most affected by the disaster. Tents and containers for temporary accommodation were delivered to the disaster zone from abroad.
