Russian striker of the Washington Capitals hockey club Alexander Ovechkin reduced the gap from Canadian Wayne Gretzky in the list of the best regular season snipers in the history of the NHL to 78 goals, now he has 816 goals, writes March 7 RIA Novosti.

In a match against Los Angeles, Ovechkin scored the puck into the opponent’s goal in the 43rd minute. Now the 37-year-old Russian player ranks second in the list of the best scorers in NHL history. He is second only to Gretzky, who has 894 goals in 1487 matches.

Despite Ovechkin’s contribution, the match ended 4-2 in favor of Los Angeles. Another Russian, Vladislav Gavrikov, distinguished himself among the winners. He successfully attacked the Washington Capitals gate in the 33rd minute.

Ovechkin began his career at Dynamo Moscow. In the 2004 draft, he was selected by Washington with the first overall number. In the American club spent 17 seasons. He is the first Russian hockey player to win the Stanley Cup as a team captain.

Formerly Ovechkin scored a double against the San Jose Sharks. The meeting ended with a score of 8:3 in favor of the Washington Capitals.
