If the opposition wins the presidential elections in Turkey, Ankara will remind Moscow that it is a member of NATO. This was stated by the adviser to the single candidate from the Turkish opposition Kemal Kılıçdaroglu Unal Ceviköz.
In an interview with the Politico newspaper, he said that Turkey will continue to act as an intermediary between Russia and Ukraine, but if Kılıçdaroglu comes to power, Turkey will strive for “equal relations” with the Russian Federation, writes Yeni Safaq on Friday, March 17th.
“In negotiations with Russia, we will certainly strive for equal relations. But we will also remind Russia that Turkey is a member of NATO,” Cheviköz said.
According to him, Ankara will not prevent Sweden and Finland from joining NATO.
Earlier, Ceviköz said that if Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu wins the presidential elections in Turkey, Ankara will continue to strengthen relations with Moscow, but at the level of institutions, not leaders. He noted that Turkey will continue to take into account both the long-standing historical ties with Moscow and the republic’s membership in NATO.
The Turkish High Electoral Commission supported the date of May 14 as the day of the presidential and parliamentary elections in the country. If a second round of presidential elections is needed, it will be held on May 28. The opponent of the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be the leader of the CHP party, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. He is also the only candidate from the opposition People’s Alliance.
