Ankara has already begun preparations for a meeting between the presidents of Turkey and Egypt, which may take place after the presidential elections. This was announced on Saturday, March 18, by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
“There is a dialogue between the intelligence agencies regarding security, discussions are underway on regional issues. I am waiting for my Egyptian counterpart in Turkey in the near future,” the diplomat added.
Cavusoglu recalled that the pre-election process has now begun in Turkey, so the meeting is possible immediately after the elections, writes RIA News.
Relations between Cairo and Ankara deteriorated after the ouster of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. Then the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the actions of the Egyptian military against the supporters of the head of state. After that, Ankara and Cairo withdrew their ambassadors for consultations, and later declared persona non grata of the diplomatic representatives of each side.
Erdogan’s first meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took place in November 2022. At the opening of the World Cup in Doha (Qatar), they shook hands. Later, the office of the Egyptian leader said that the presidents agreed to start a new chapter in the history of relations between their countries.
