The State Revenue Committee (SRC) of Armenia has begun preparations for the possible opening of the Margara checkpoint on the border with Turkey. This was reported in the department on Sunday, March 19.
The committee’s message noted that in order to ensure the technical part of the restart of the checkpoint, the State Revenue Committee appealed to the Council of Elders of the Metsamor community so that the property in the village of Margara, which is considered the property of the community, was donated to the State Revenue Committee, transmits Sputnik Armenia publication.
It was noted that this property is planned to be used for customs control, if such a need arises in the future. We are talking about the customs building and other unfinished infrastructure adjacent to the border. Earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry also reported that the bridges and roads on the border with Turkey are suitable for operation.
There have been no diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia since 1993, when Ankara supported Baku in the Karabakh conflict. Difficult relations between the countries were also caused by Turkey’s sharp reaction to the international recognition of the 1915 Armenian genocide. The border between the states has been closed since 1993 at the initiative of Ankara.
The “thaw” in the relationship occurred in January 2023. During the negotiations Yerevan and Ankara decided to eliminate remaining barriers to direct air cargo. In addition, in December 2021, Armenia and Turkey appointed their special representatives for negotiations on the normalization of bilateral relations.
